From inland, you reach a high point at Casale Marittimo and then descend towards the countryside, farms and cypresses of Bibbona, an icon of an ever-beautiful Tuscany. You cycle past the beautiful Macchia della Magona, a protected nature reserve and forestry estate closed to motorised traffic and accessible only to adventurers on bicycles, on foot and on horseback. The route continues through the legendary vineyards of Bolgheri, before climbing towards Castagneto and Sassetta, where the superb descent towards Suvereto begins.

After crossing the river and the small rural hamlet Casetta di Cornia, you ride past Campo ai Mori, the scene of a battle in 802 A.D., when the local population fought the Saracen pirates who had enacted the Sack of Populonia. The route continues through olive groves and vineyards towards the castle of Casalappi and the hamlet of San Lorenzo, returning to Suvereto after a ford on the river Cornia, running through beautiful vineyards on the slopes of Monte Peloso.

This is a long route (almost 200 km) to be covered in stages. If you are a cycle-tourist, we recommend planning 3 or 4 sections: the roads are wonderful and there are many places to stop. Suvereto is the starting point for “navigating” amidst the waves of land, woods and countryside that create a landscape with a strong identity. The circuit has its main points of historical interest in the towns of Massa Marittima and Volterra, which themselves are worth the trip. From a naturalistic point of view, the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) and the Colline del Vapore (Hills of Steam) offer many unique scenarios, and the roads are particularly suitable for cyclists and cycle-tourists.

The first part of the route follows the harmonious landscape between Suvereto and the Metalliferous Hills. Vineyards are a constant feature of this short but particularly lovely journey that runs through the hamlets of San Lorenzo and Casalappi. At Cafaggio, you cross the provincial road and move into the hills that characterise the landscape between Campiglia Marittima and Suvereto. A short stretch on a dirt track leads back to the Suvereto plains.
