At the heart of Val di Cornia

A mainly flat route on the fertile plains around the river Cornia river, following it to its mouth. After crossing the river and the small rural hamlet Casetta di Cornia, you ride past Campo ai Mori, the scene of a battle in 802 A.D., when the local population fought the Saracen pirates who had enacted the Sack of Populonia. The route continues through olive groves and vineyards towards the castle of Casalappi and the hamlet of San Lorenzo, returning to Suvereto after a ford on the river Cornia, running through beautiful vineyards on the slopes of Monte Peloso.
